Relationship Mediation Service

Disagreements can often cause stress on you, your family and your relationships with others.
Mediation can provide helpful solutions in a wide range of issues including, LGBT+ coming out issues, dealing with trans+ siblings transitioning and relationships with family and  friends.

Communication issues are often the key cause of tension within the relationship. Mediation is not counselling, albeit when appropriate, can sit comfortably alongside someone receiving counselling. It is a process where a neutral person (qualified mediator), using counselling skills, works with people who have disagreements to help them to find their own solution and reach an agreement that will sort out their issues to improve communication in their relationship.

Mediation involves an independent, impartial person helping two or more people, family members or friends reach a solution that's acceptable to everyone. Mediators do not make judgments or determine outcomes, they ask questions that help to uncover underlying problems, assist the parties to understand the issues and help them to clarify the options for resolving their differences.

The overriding aim of the mediation is to restore and maintain the relationship wherever possible. The past and emotional triggers are discussed, as dealing with people’s emotions and feelings are of the utmost importance as they are key to sorting things out. However, the focus is on working together to move forward, not focusing on determining who was right or wrong in the past.

Mediation is and can be very successful in resolving differences. Many kinds of conflict can be mediated if those involved have a genuine want and need to find a way forward. It can be used at any stage but is most effective before positions become entrenched.
The LGBT Cymru Helpline Mediation Service has a sliding scale for different financial circumstances, from £10 to £45 per hour (most cases will need between 4 to 6 hours). All money raised is put back into the community with supporting LGBT+ people and their families.
